Founded in 1867 by Rev. Darby P. Willis as a humble Brush Arbor worship site nestled among oak trees, Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Gallion, Alabama, has stood as a beacon of faith, resilience, and leadership for over 150 years.

From its earliest days as a log cabin gathering place, Oak Grove has grown through the vision and dedication of its many pastors—each leaving a lasting mark on the church’s spiritual and physical foundations. Under Rev. Willis and his successors, the church evolved from simple beginnings to a central place of worship and education in the community, even housing the Oak Grove Rosenwald School, built in 1925.

As generations passed, Oak Grove’s sanctuary was expanded, its ministries multiplied, and its congregation strengthened. From installing church bells and pews in the 19th century to launching full-time services, paying off the church mortgage, and creating a vibrant online presence in the 21st, the church has continuously adapted while staying rooted in its founding mission.

Significant progress was made under Rev. Albert Murdock, who led the construction of the current sanctuary—completed in 2001—and broke new ground by appointing women to the Trustee ministry. Later pastors, including Rev. Hezekiah Young, Rev. Donald J. White, and Rev. Willie Smith, furthered this legacy by establishing new ministries, paving the church grounds, and expanding outreach.

Today, Rev. Winifred F. Agee leads Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church with a renewed spirit of worship, education, and community service. Weekly Bible studies, women’s and evangelistic ministries, and a growing digital footprint reflect a church still deeply committed to both its heritage and its future.

More than a building, Oak Grove is a testament to faith in action—a living legacy built by generations of believers determined to serve God, nurture community, and shine as a light in the Canebrake region and beyond.
