Master Carpenter


Joe Glasgow was born in Virginia and arrived as a slave of Henry A. Tayloe in 1832. His death is unknown. His spouse was Celia. She was born ca. 1841, and her death is unknown.

Joe Glasgow became a free person of color and a carpenter in the employ of Henry A. Tayloe. Joe Glasgow and Peter Lee were master carpenters of Henry A. Tayloe’s plantation and were the chief builders, along with the slaves, of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Joe Glasgow and Peter Lee were also instrumental in building the slave cabins at Faunsdale Plantation.

There is not much known about Joe’s social life and his life in the community of Allenville, Hale, Alabama. There has been no remembrance from his grandchildren or great grandchildren of his contributions to the community other than as father, farmer and craftsman.

  • Traverous (Travis) Glasgow born 1863 in Marengo County, Alabama.
  • Lucy Glasgow, ca. 1872-
  • Joseph Glasgow, Jr. 1872-
  • Maor Glasgow, ca 1875-

Traverous (Travis) married Fannie Collins on December 1, 1887. She was born 1870 and died 1953. Traverous occupation was that of a Barber. He died in 1941 in Allenville, Hale, Alabama.

  • Hardie Glasgow born ca. 1888 Allenville, Hale, Alabama and died 1958. Hardie served in World War 1, enlisted as PFC in Co C 816 Pioneer Inf.
  • George Glasgow born ca. 1890 Allenville, Hale, Alabama.
  • Alma Glasgow born ca. 1891, died 1982.
  • Floyd Glasgow born ca. 1892 Allenville, Hale, Alabama, died July 24, 1932, in Knoxville, Knox, Tennessee.
  • Joe Glasgow born ca. 1893 in Allenville, Hale, Alabama. Death unknown.
  • Sidney Glasgow born 1896 in Allenville, Hale, Alabama. Death unknown.
  • Lillian Glasgow born 1897 in Allenville, Hale, Alabama, died 1919 in Jefferson, Alabama.
